In Jagdishpur/Bettiah, NDHR Bihar conducted a comprehensive fact-finding inquiry into an incident of alleged violence against a Dalit family residing in Gulharia village under Bhitaha police station in Bagaha police district. According to accounts collected from the victim’s family and local villagers, the incident began when the accused’s son was playing obscene songs. When the family requested him to stop, the situation escalated, and the accused allegedly attacked the victim’s house using sticks, rods, and by pelting bricks and stones from multiple sides.
The victim’s son was away at the time, attending a family wedding, leaving the household members vulnerable. The family immediately informed the local police; however, they allege that a police officer (Jamadar) at Bhitaha police station refused to visit the site without a formally registered FIR. This alleged delay in police response reportedly contributed to serious injuries sustained by four members of the family.
Following the incident, the victim’s family, along with villagers, met the Station House Officer to seek information and demand prompt action. The fact-finding team, representing NDHR Bihar, undertook on-ground verification and documentation of the incident, aiming to ensure justice for the victims and highlight systemic issues in timely law enforcement response in cases affecting marginalized communities.
